Horley v Bosham - Sussex Junior Cricket Festival u12s

posted 28 Jul 2011, 01:23 by Martin Farrell
Thomas Gogarty played his best ever innings for Bosham as he resolutely maintained his focus to grind out a fabulous victory against Horley. With only three wickets remaining and still needing 51 runs to win Bosham dug-in and refused to give up thanks to the Fantastic Four.

The Fantastic Four

Bosham had thrown away early wickets with some disappointing shots in what appeared to be over confidence in in being able to chase down a moderate total of 121.

Gogarty partnered with Jason Beard, Ben Farrell and Barnaby Watney for the last three wickets. When Luke Spencer was unfortunate to leave a straight ball from Bailey Darar it reduced Bosham to 71 for 6. Momentum had swung towards Horley and the home side were now clear favourites for the match. Opening bowler Max Holland was reintroduced in to the attack as Horley searched for the next wicket. Beard had joined Gogarty for the seventh wicket and the pair set about defending against the better Horley bowlers. Beard kept out the bowlers for 13 deliveries as the pair added 18 valuable runs to the total.

When Beard finally succumbed to the bowling of Matthew Gainsford edging one behind to the keeper Bosham were seven wickets down for 89. As they were playing with only 10 men it meant 33 were needed with just two wickets left. Ben Farrell was next in and he started nervously prodding forward and looping the ball tantalising close to the fielder at short extra cover. His nerves were calmed when he smashed the next ball over mid-on for four. From then on he survived 21 balls in a partnership that added 29 runs and put Bosham within four runs of victory.

Meanwhile Gogarty was playing superbly, taking the majority of the strike and seeing off the best Horley bowlers. In the 35th over Farrell clipped a ball off his legs that went past the short leg fielder and the batsmen set off for a run. The rest of the Bosham players on the boundary were screaming for two runs to be taken and this turned out to be terrible advice as Farrell was run out by a couple of metres with a direct hit. To add to their woes Farrell has run one short in his desperation to make his ground.

With the score on 118 it was the turn of last man Barnaby Watney to pair up with Gogarty. Watney resolutely defended seven dot balls as he too denied Horley the victory.

At the start of 39th over Palmer dropped the ball a little full and wide and Gogarty pounced crafting a superb off drive past cover for four. It was the culmination of a brilliant innings that had lasted over two hours and 93 balls. He had carried his bat for the whole innings and scored a match winning total of 57 not out.
