Bosham 1st XI vs Goring by Sea

Saturday 5th May 2018

Bosham 1st XI began the league season away to Goring by Sea. Bosham were sporting the new club playing strip, showing off the long term commitments to the club from SouthCoast Group, Mirco, Sovereign Lets and Gibbard and Sons electricians. Club Captain Derick Garner won the toss and put Goring by Sea in on a pitch that felt a bit like a cake that Paul Hollywood would say needs another few minutes in the oven to be ready.

Tom Cowell and Tom Gibbard blew away their first game cobwebs for a few overs before both taking two wickets and reducing Goring to 45 for 4. Tom Broughton and Paul Burry then came on and Burry bowled his normal tight lines to take 3-16 and with a wicket for Broughton, off a stunning catch at slip by Garner, Goring were in trouble at 70 for 8. An attacking innings from Goring's number 9 got them up to 112 before David Maclean took the last two wickets. It was a healthy start in the field from Bosham, the only blip perhaps being Goring's seconds highest scorer was the extras. So lots of improvement to come in the field.

After tea a new opening pair of Selves and Kimber opened up. Neither lasted long against the new ball and Van Niekert also followed as Goring's openers made the most of the hard ball on the stodgy wicket. Bosham in a bit of bother at 4-3. Maclean and Garner steadied the ship taking the side to 39 before Maclean fell to a great catch. Garner then went 2 runs later and Bosham were back in bother at 41-5. Burry was joined by Ed Johnson at the crease. Ed, the holder of the duck tie from last season (most scores of 0), had to this point not scored a run in league cricket for the club. Ed then got off the mark to ecstatic cheers from the side line. Ed went on to score a match turning 23 along with Burry's 32 taking Bosham to the brink of victory before both falling to the returning opening bowlers. With Gibbard falling quickly after, Bosham on 101-8 needed 12 runs for victory. In strode new boy Toby Lynch with instructions to take his time and see off the last over of Goring's best bowler. Toby looked at one ball then sent the next ball back over the bowlers head for four. While Broughton kept his wicket in tack, two more strong shots at the other end from Lynch and Bosham claimed an opening victory.

It was a win full of first game rust but overall a real team effort. Goring seem to be a team Bosham always have close, low scoring games against. Fortunately it is 3 on the bounce to Bosham though!

The flowing weeks game was rained off leaving Bosham in second place in the table after two rounds.

A massive thank you to SouthCoast Group, Micro, Sovereign Lets and Gibbard and Sons electricians for the shirt sponsorship. In such tight games perhaps the team that looks the part finds those extra runs at the end!

Man of the Match: Paul Burry.

Champaign Moment: Ed's first league runs.
